If you are going to battle the foreclosure of your home,
you must understand your rights and how to utilize them for
your greatest gain. This means getting informed and if you
would like to keep your house, it means getting
well-informed rapidly.
The initial piece of information you must understand is that
each state has different laws that govern this. There is not
one common law that regulates all states. What this means is
that you must educate yourself about your state to find out
what those laws are. Keep in mind that those laws govern
your foreclosure rights
and determine what they are.
Your state’s website is a great starting point for helping
you understand your rights. Searching for the term
foreclosure should give you a starting point. It should
bring up something related to foreclosure in your state. In
my own case, I can tell you that it brought up a phone
number I could call. My situation happened in Colorado and
they have established a free hotline number that gives
homeowners free help. With the housing crisis in our country
right now, most areas give homeowners some sort of free
help. It all depends on your state and how bad the issue is
in your state.
Another excellent source of information about your
foreclosure rights is a lawyer. I understand how hard or
even unworkable it is to have the funds for a lawyer when
you are in the middle of losing your home but there are
sources out there that can assist. If your earnings are
small enough, you may be able to meet the requirements for
free assistance from a lawyer or you might be able to locate
an attorney that would undertake your circumstances pro bono
(for free). You will never discover that unless you do some
digging and unless you request assistance from a lawyer to
see if they are disposed to assist you.
Your foreclosure rights can also become clearer to you if
you do some digging on the web. Look at all of the paperwork
that you have gotten from your lender’s attorneys. Research
the terms and phrases that you do not understand. I did this
with some of my documentation and I was much better informed
by the time I was done. That being said, there are still a
lot of people out there who are not reputable. There are
scams all over the internet that try to take advantage of
people in your situation. One way to help avoid getting
trapped is by looking at several websites and comparing what
you see. If you see the same information repeated in several
different places, chances are that you have good
information. Looking at different sites also gives you a
broader view of the information and can help you make
informed decisions about what to do and where to go next.
Knowing your rights is one of the top methods to prevent
foreclosure on your home. Determining methods to inform
yourself is the greatest means to do that.
